What are some ways to help with hot flashes and night sweats? (recent surgical menopause & unable to take HRT)?

Lidybeff in Australia asked:

I am unable to take hormone replacement as my cancer was hormone sensitive. I am 7 weeks into surgical menopause and went straight from regular ovulation to losing my ovaries , and everything else. I am coping with the hot episodes (and am grateful to now be cancer free) but would appreciate any tips anyone could give me on how to lessen them or ease them. I can’t take any hormones, not even plant based ones. Thanks.

there isn’t much you can do except suffer through them. i have fans in every room, and i turn them on when i need them, even in winter. it will eventually get better as time goes on, but i found that the hot flashes came far more frequently at the beginning.

My mother put two air conditioners in her bedroom. She had those gel ice packs (which she would put on the back of her neck) and was always drinking ice water.
She was 47 when she started going through the change and confined to bed with emphysema, so she had to find some way to keep herself cool without being able to just get up and hop into a cold shower or stick her head in a freezer.
If I was there sweets, I would fan you all day and not talk dirty…cuz I’m helpful like that. :)
    Good luck xoxo Dawna

Well! You can’t do the hormone therapy…’cause that’s what I was going to recommend (would take up to 6 years)…

So, the next best thing is to adjust your eating habits to strictly organic foods (including meat & dairy products…if not a Vegan).

I’m empathetic Lidybeff w/2 ffs…It’s a pain, I know. Suffered through menopause with 3 women in my life so far. I know it’s not fun. Plus you have the added weight of the.

Best of luck to you :)

I’ve seen ads in magazines for pajamas for menopausal women. They wick away moisture to keep you cool. I googled menopause pajamas and got a lot of hits!:*:IE-SearchBox&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=ie7&rlz=1I7DKUS

Hot flashes are regarded by the medical profession as deficiency of estrogen and can be triggered by a variety of stimulants such as:

    • Spicy food (cayenne, ginger, pepper)
    • Acidic foods (pickles, citrus, tomatoes)
    • Hot drinks
    • Caffeine (coffee, black tea, cola, chocolate)
    • Alcoholic drinks, including wine and beer
    • White sugar
    • Hydrogenated or saturated fats (meat, margarine)
    • Stress
    • Hot weather
    • Hot tubs and saunas
    • Tobacco or marijuana
    • Intense exercise, especially lovemaking
    • Anger, especially if you can’t express it
