The “men” in menstruation and menopause comes from the word menses which means the blood that comes from the uterus. The word menses derived from the 16th century Latin word “mensis” which meant the plural of month.

    LOL – good question!

If you want the technical answer, it’s because the prefix “Meno-” comes from the Latin word for “moon” or “month” (since one month is one turning of the moon). So, in other words, “Meno-” + “pause” means a pause (stop) in one’s monthly cycles.

From Latin menopausis < Ancient Greek ??? (“‘month’”) + ?????? (“‘pause’”).

So the monthly (meno) problem goes on pause? NOT!
Dumb word! It isn’t a temporary pause, it is permanent. It may be nice to have the monthly problem stop, but the side effects stink!

Maybe we should speak less latin.

Besides Women only pause long enough to sleep.
