You can start at any age. There would be reasons why a young woman would be menopausal, but it does happen. I think that it’s usually in your early to mid-50′s when most women experience menopausal symptoms.
The answer about starting when your mother started is not correct! Just because we have our parent’s genetic make up does not make us predisposed to DO everything on their time-line. Otherwise I would have died at 38 like my mother did! I’m still standing!

Perimenopause can start as early as your early 30′s, actual menopause usually follows within a few years.
In perimenopause, you get the same symptoms as menopause, just not as severe.
