I’m 40 and for the past couple of years have had signs of perimenopause?

lisa asked:

My mom went through menopause at about 42. And so did her mother. So out of me and my two sisters looks like I’m the one that’s going through it young. I’m really worried because I’ve heard it can really age a person. I already have dry skin to begin with and very fair skin. My mom looks great she’s 72 and her mom also looked great even when she died at 90. But everyone’s different and my skin is not as thick as hers I don’t think. She’s very fair like me but my texture skin is different. I’m so worried is there any reassurance that this won’t age me. I’m still single and this really worries me! If I start looking old I’m doomed!
I’ve had a test at the dr and my levels were normal but my dr said they fluctuate so they may have just been ok that time. I have hot flashes, depression, mood swings, gained weight around the stomach.
Oh and does it age you during perimenopause or right after menopause I mean when does this process happen? I mean if my periods stop at 41 will I look really old then?

It is hard to tell what effects it will have on you, because, as you say, everyone’s different. Since your hormone levels are normal, that should keep things better and more youthful. A suggestion: go on birth control pills, so you can keep your hormone levels at a more even keel. Since you’re so young, it’s likely not good for you to go through menopause so early.
