martinmartinjm asked:

I eat healthy, exercise more than I ever have (walking a few miles every other day). What could be the problem and please don’t say muscle weight. I am at my wits end at what to do aside from stopping eating. I have been on south beach diet, weightwatchers, etc. I am 5 ft 4 inches and weigh 147 lbs. Please help.

This is very common during menopause. There are several reasons for the weight to be so stubborn, from biological reasons to hormonal and stress issues.

Make sure you don’t have low thyroid…it’s estimated that 25% of women do by the time they hit menopause. Get tested.

Do not starve yourself…this will make it harder to lose weight.

I know it’s not what you want to hear, but you need to be patient. If you’re losing a half-pound a week, that’s progress.

You may need to try different exercise – strength training, more intense exercise.

There are supplements that can help with metabolism – L-carnitine is one.

    Well I’m 5′ 3″ and 167 lbs so you can feel a bit better… Just 5 yrs ago I was at 122 lbs! :-(

We’re in the same boat. No matter what I do….

I weighed around 120-125 for YEARS, till my late 30′s. Then the weight started coming on, about age 44 I climbed on the scale and freaked. I’d weighed around 145 for a few years, but I was staring down at the number 160. So I went on a diet, one of my own making really, counting calories and cutting out some carbs. By doing that and that alone, I went back down to 122 over the period of a year. Maintained it for a couple of years, then I got pneumonia. After that, my periods went wonky and the weight started coming back. Gained 10 lbs within a few months. Was still pretty comfortable at 132. I could live with it. Then I decided to go to graduate school :-z

By the time I got out, I was back up to 160. So this past January, I decided: back to the old way of eating. I did it religiously for 3 months. Nothing came off. Scale remained at that ridiculous number. I added exercise. Now I exercise 3-4 times a week. My weight? It’s gone UP to my current 167. I eat well. I don’t eat processed foods.

I’m going to start on some of those supps talked about on those other pages. It’s worth a shot~ plus make a appt with an endocronologist. I hate being this fat. It’s horrid.
